Why this site exists

Most of what a small business owner in Trinidad needs to know is not secret. It is written in the Income Tax Act, the Value Added Tax Act, the Companies Act and a dozen guidance notes. It is simply not written in a form anyone outside the profession can use.

So the same questions come round year after year. When must I register for VAT? Why did I get a tax bill in a year I made a loss? What is the green fund levy and why does it not go away? How much life insurance do I actually need? Am I claiming everything I am entitled to?

This site is the answer to those questions, written once and properly, and given away.

The practice behind it

Noble Accounting & Insurance is led by Alisha Clarence, a Chartered Accountant practising in Trinidad and Tobago, combining two disciplines that are usually kept apart: accounting and taxation on one side, insurance and protection on the other. In practice they are the same conversation. The decision about how to structure a business affects the tax bill, which affects the cash available, which affects what cover the business can carry, which determines whether one bad event ends it.

Clients range from sole traders registering a business name for the first time, through established companies needing accounts, payroll and tax compliance handled properly, to individuals and families wanting their personal tax position and insurance cover reviewed by someone with no product to push.

How we work

A note on the writing

Every guide here is written from practice — from the questions clients actually ask and the errors that actually cost them money. Where a figure matters, it is stated plainly and dated. Where the position is uncertain or subject to change, that is said rather than glossed over.

Tax rates, thresholds and filing procedures in Trinidad and Tobago do change. The articles are reviewed and updated, but no article can substitute for advice on your own facts. Where something here is about to affect a decision you are making, confirm it — with the Inland Revenue Division, with the National Insurance Board, with your insurer, or with us.

The idea behind it

Professional knowledge accumulated over a career is worth very little sitting in one person's head. Written down, indexed and made public, it keeps working long after the working day ends. That is what this library is for.
